Nestled below Vancouver Island’s Malahat Highway in Cobble Hill, British Columbia, is the Arbutus Ridge Golf Club. Despite living in Victoria (approximately a 50 minute drive), Arbutus Ridge was my go-to golf course.

Arbutus Ridge Golf Club was designed in 1987 by Bill Robinson. It is a short-medium length par 71, and caters to golfers of all levels and ages. It ranges in length from 5,535yds (red tees) to 6,193yds (blue tees).

arbutuscourseCobble Hill, BC, is not a desirable location for a golf course. With the high number of golf course in Victoria, few golfers will endure the commute of the Malahat. On the contrary, it’s remote location is also what makes this course so great. With about 640 homes in the Arbutus Ridge retirement community, a great portion of Arbutus Ridge’s golfers are retirees with memberships. These are the type of individuals who will play the course numerous times a week, early in the morning before it gets too hot, leaving open tee-time availability for those who are willing to make the trek. During the peak season (Apr. 20 – Oct. 6), Arbutus Ridge offers a sunset rate of $30, starting at 4:30. With other Victoria area golf courses, it would be difficult to get a tee-time at 4:30, and even harder to finish 18 holes before the sun goes down – but not Arbutus Ridge. With next to no one on the course, I was continually able play a full round at the sunset rate. The regular summer rate is $55-$60, with a twilight (2:30PM-4:30PM) rate of $44. These rates do not include power or pull carts.

The course is medium length and fairly hilly. The fairways are fairway and green speed is medium, and usually runs very true. With short, playable rough, Arbutus Ridge creates an enjoyable experience for all golfers. The signature hole, as shown in the photo, is a daunting 214yds (151yds red, 174yds blue) par 3, located at the 17th hole. The green is almost entirely surrounded with water, with a narrow lay-up area to the right of the green, sandwiched between the out-of-bounds road to the right and the water in front.

Victoria has a plethora of golf courses to offer, but if you own a vehicle and enjoy a fast-paced, affordable round, it doesn’t get much better than Arbutus Ridge.
